In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) In vitro fertilization (IVF), a term used to describe fertilization achieved outside the human body, is a major treatment for infertility when other methods of assisted conception have failed. The patient could be given fertility drugs to increase the number of eggs that can be produced at ovulation (super ovulation), the eggs are then fertilized with the sperm and allowed to develop in the incubator for about 2-5 days until it has divided into four to hundred cells depending on its duration of in vitro culture. Following fertilization, one to three embryos will be transferred to the uterus using a soft, fine catheter. This procedure is known as embryo transfer and it requires no anesthesia.
